German Public Sector Workers Launch Strikes Amid Rising Living Costs

(MENAFN) Public sector workers staged walkouts across multiple German cities on Wednesday, impacting schools, daycare centers, and government offices.

The strikes coincided with the third round of collective bargaining talks in Potsdam, where approximately 6,000 public sector employees gathered for a large-scale rally.

"Staff from schools, universities, and daycare centers are expecting an offer from employers at the third round of negotiations," the GEW union said in a statement. "If no offer is forthcoming, there will be further nationwide strikes," the union warned.

The walkouts were organized by four unions—GEW, Verdi, IG-Bau, and GdP—which together represent over 2 million public employees. The unions are pushing for a 7% salary increase, with a minimum boost of 300 euros ($325) per month, citing the need to counter rising living costs.
