UNDP, Norway, Italy Sign Deal to Restore Syria’s Deir Ali Power Plant
(MENAFN) The UN Development Program (UNDP), together with the governments of Norway and Italy, has signed a $10.7 million agreement to rehabilitate the Deir Ali power plant in the Damascus countryside, aiming to improve electricity availability in southern Syria.
The project will focus on restoring Extension II of the Deir Ali facility through urgent maintenance, procurement and installation of essential spare parts, and training of technical personnel to ensure proper operation and upkeep, according to UNDP.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to restore around 120 megawatts of capacity, benefiting over two million people in the Damascus countryside as well as the Daraa, Quneitra, and Suwayda regions, where electricity remains severely limited.
Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Damascus, the Deir Ali power plant is one of Syria’s key electricity generation facilities. When fully operational, it has a total capacity of 1,450 MW, supplying power to large portions of the country through the national grid.
