Philippine Shipwreck Death Toll Rises to Fifty-Two
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities from last week’s ship sinking in the Philippines increased to 52 on Wednesday after authorities recovered another body, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.
“As of this morning, the PCG recorded 52 fatalities and 316 survivors in connection with the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3,” the Coast Guard said in a statement shared on social media.
Technical divers remain at the wreck site, though officials have not specified how many passengers are still unaccounted for.
The MV Trisha Kerstin 3 was traveling to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it capsized near Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan. The vessel sent a distress signal around 1:50 a.m. (1750 GMT) on January 25, roughly four hours after departing the Port of Zamboanga City at the southwestern tip of Mindanao.
