Gaza Residents Seek Comfort in ‘Winter Swimming’
(MENAFN) Along Gaza City’s shoreline, dozens of Palestinians are turning to early morning swims as a way to relieve psychological stress and momentarily escape the pressures of life under the Israeli blockade. Despite the winter chill, both young men and elderly residents brave the sea each morning, combining exercise with moments of joy and a sense of physical renewal.
Swimming coach Mohammed Mahra leads his trainees at the water’s edge, conducting fitness drills as the first light of sunrise reflects off the Mediterranean. Mahra noted that nearly everyone in Gaza has experienced loss, deprivation, and hunger, yet his team strives to foster hope and positivity.
“We’ve grown used to enjoying swimming in the morning, in summer and winter alike,” Mahra said. “We insist on restoring vitality and positive energy on the seashore, which has borne witness to the tragedies and pain that befell Gaza.”
He added that their activity, carried out even without basic equipment, serves as a message of defiance and resilience. Despite the presence of Israeli gunboats, which sometimes fire toward swimmers and fishermen, Mahra emphasizes that the sea remains a place for determination and life in the heart of Gaza.
