Angel Resembling Italian PM Gets Removed from Rome Church
(MENAFN) A fresco in a historic Rome church has had an angel figure resembling Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni removed following objections from Vatican authorities.
The artwork, located in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina, one of the city’s oldest churches, had been restored last year by artist Bruno Valentinetti. The resemblance to Meloni was reported earlier this month, triggering an inquiry by church officials and the cultural authorities.
Valentinetti later admitted that the figure was indeed inspired by the prime minister. Church representatives stated that the depiction did not align with the original iconography or the sacred character of the site, and the artist painted over the face at the request of the Vatican.
“Images of sacred art and Christian tradition cannot be misused or exploited,” said Rome's Cardinal Baldassare Reina.
The Diocese of Rome confirmed that the figure’s original facial features will be restored. Officials also emphasized that any restoration work in the church must receive prior authorization from the relevant authorities.
