New Zealand Launches New Antarctic Climate Partnership with UAE
(MENAFN) A groundbreaking Antarctic research alliance between New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates was unveiled Monday, marking a strategic collaboration to advance climate prediction capabilities through cutting-edge engineering and autonomous technology.
New Zealand Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti announced the partnership will deploy sophisticated autonomous systems and enhance sea-ice forecasting models to track how Antarctic shifts impact global weather patterns and coastal regions.
"By combining our research expertise with the UAE's strengths in engineering and autonomous technologies, we will develop new tools to better understand and predict how climate change in Antarctica affects our weather, oceans and coastal communities," Reti stated.
The memorandum of arrangement between Khalifa University and Antarctica New Zealand establishes two flagship initiatives under the Antarctic Science Platform, concentrating on ice-shelf melt dynamics and ocean circulation patterns.
New Zealand is committing 1 million NZ dollars (600,000 U.S. dollars) to the bilateral projects, Reti confirmed. This investment builds on the government's substantial 49 million NZ dollars (29.49 million U.S. dollars) seven-year funding package revealed in May 2025, designed to strengthen the Antarctic Science Platform and expand international scientific cooperation.
