Trump Announces Sweeping Sanctions on 31 Iran Oil Targets
(MENAFN) The Trump administration unveiled sweeping sanctions Friday against 31 targets connected to Iran's petroleum industry, including 15 entities, two individuals, and 14 covert tanker vessels operating as part of Tehran's clandestine oil network.
"The President is committed to driving down the Iranian regime's illicit oil and petrochemical exports under the Administration's maximum pressure campaign," the U.S. Department of State said in a statement.
The punitive measures were announced just as indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran concluded in Muscat, Oman on Friday.
Iran's official news agency IRNA reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi characterized the Friday discussions as narrowly focused on nuclear matters exclusively, with Tehran refusing to engage on alternative subjects with Washington.
Araghchi said that "very deep distrust" formed in past dealings between the two countries posed "a very big challenge" to the negotiations.
The foreign minister identified profound mistrust rooted in the bilateral relationship's troubled history as a significant obstacle to achieving diplomatic progress.
