Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman Clash Online Over Ties to Jeffrey Epstein
(MENAFN) A heated exchange unfolded on social media between tech billionaires Elon Musk and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, following renewed attention to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein’s network and the tech leaders’ associations with him.
The dispute began Tuesday when Musk accused Hoffman of visiting Epstein’s private island, a location linked to allegations of sexual abuse and trafficking. Musk wrote on social media, "The big difference between you and me, Reid, is that you went and I did not. In fact, you went multiple times," distancing himself from Hoffman’s interactions with Epstein.
Musk reiterated that he consistently declined Epstein’s invitations, including trips to the island, eventually severing contact entirely. In a follow-up post, he added, "And, as the email shows, I obviously didn’t anticipate anything actually shady, as I was bringing my wife at the time (Talulah). Nonetheless, UNLIKE YOU, I came to my senses and declined to go. Epstein tried to get me to go to his island so many times that eventually I just blocked him."
Hoffman quickly responded, disputing Musk’s claims and emphasizing that his encounters with Epstein were linked to institutional fundraising rather than personal relationships. He explained that his visits were part of efforts to raise money for the MIT Media Lab, conducted alongside the lab’s former director, Joi Ito, and acknowledged in hindsight that the association was a mistake.
Hoffman also referenced a federal review to counter Musk’s insinuations, stating that an FBI examination during the Trump administration found “no hits” related to him. He urged public focus on accountability for crimes against victims rather than engaging in personal disputes online.
