Second Round of Russia-Ukraine-US Talks Begins in Abu Dhabi
(MENAFN) A new phase of trilateral discussions involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States has officially begun in Abu Dhabi, marking the second round of talks aimed at addressing the war that has lasted nearly four years, Ukraine’s lead negotiator announced on Wednesday.
“The negotiation process started in a trilateral format — Ukraine, the United States, and Russia,” Rustem Umerov said in a public statement, explaining that the joint talks will later branch into separate working groups focused on specific issues.
Umerov noted that once those parallel discussions conclude, a “follow-up joint synchronization of positions” is planned. He stressed that the Ukrainian delegation is operating “within the clear directives of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to achieve a dignified and lasting peace.”
“We inform the Head of State about the progress of each stage of the negotiations,” he added.
The current talks follow an initial round of consultations held over two days on Jan. 23–24, also in the Emirati capital, where delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the US met for preliminary exchanges.
The US delegation includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier on Wednesday, according to reports.
Following the first round, officials from Kyiv and Washington described the discussions as “constructive,” while Moscow said contacts had begun in a positive manner, though it cautioned that there remains “significant work ahead.”
Shortly after the second round got underway, Russian officials indicated that no statements would be issued on Wednesday regarding the outcome of the negotiations, as the talks are expected to continue for two days.
