EU Commissioner Calls for EU-Türkiye Partnership
(MENAFN) EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has urged a “stronger partnership” between the European Union and Türkiye, describing it as a mutually beneficial opportunity. Speaking to Anadolu ahead of her official visit to Ankara on February 5–6, Kos said it is time to “look with fresh eyes” at EU-Türkiye relations and emphasized that the two economies are highly interdependent.
Kos noted that her visit reflects the approach of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who recently met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to explore a new direction for cooperation. She added that she has maintained “intense contacts” with Turkish officials, particularly Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, since the start of her mandate.
Highlighting current geopolitical tensions, Kos stressed the need for strengthened cooperation amid the influence of major powers like China, Russia, and the US. She also underscored the importance of collaboration on migration, saying developments on either side affect the other.
Kos expressed hope for a Ukraine peace agreement, noting that it could improve the situation in Europe and the Black Sea region, where she views Türkiye as a key partner.
