Mexico Vows Minimum Water Deliveries to US
(MENAFN) Mexico has agreed to supply at least 350,000 acre-feet of water per year to the United States, officials reported Tuesday.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins welcomed the commitment, which strengthens the implementation of the 1944 Water Treaty between the two countries.
"Under the negotiated outcome, Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet of water per year to the United States during the current five-year cycle, providing stability for agricultural producers and rural communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley," the officials said.
The announcement follows a recent call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, during which both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to addressing long-standing water management challenges.
Rubio described the agreement as a "win" for American farmers and ranchers and praised Sheinbaum for her "consistent efforts" to meet Mexico’s obligations under the treaty.
The U.S. and Mexico plan to hold monthly meetings to ensure that water deliveries remain timely and consistent throughout the five-year cycle.
