Moscow Condemns Terrorist Attack on Main International Airport in Niger

(MENAFN) Russia has condemned a terrorist assault on the main international airport in Niger’s capital last week and reaffirmed its support for security operations against jihadist groups in the Sahel region.

The attack occurred last Thursday when armed assailants on motorcycles targeted Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey. The airport hosts a military base used by a joint force involving Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Russian personnel. An Islamic State affiliate operating in the Sahel claimed responsibility for the incident.

The group has been linked to several major attacks in Niger in recent months, including an assault in the Tillaberi region in September that reportedly killed over 120 people and the kidnapping of an American pilot in October.

In a Monday statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Nigerien forces, with Russian support, repelled the attack. Approximately 20 of the 40 militants involved were killed, and weapons and other equipment were seized.

“Moscow strongly condemns this latest extremist attack. A similar attack took place in September 2024 on Mali’s capital airport. According to available information, external forces are involved in the terrorist attacks, providing training and technical support,” the ministry said.

The statement added that Russia will continue to strengthen cooperation with Sahel countries, including enhancing the combat readiness of their armed forces and providing training for military and law enforcement personnel.
