Collision Off Chios Leaves Dozens Dead

(MENAFN) At least 14 individuals lost their lives after a speedboat transporting migrants collided with a Greek Coast Guard patrol vessel near the island of Chios, local officials reported late Tuesday.

The accident took place on Tuesday evening close to Mirsinidi Beach on Chios. Rescue teams retrieved 14 bodies from the sea following the collision, a public broadcaster reported, referencing the Greek Coast Guard.

Several injured migrants, including seven children and two expectant mothers, were rushed to hospitals to receive medical care.

Two Coast Guard members were also hospitalized: a female officer suffering from a concussion and a male officer with an injury to his upper limb, according to the report.

Additionally, four migrants were reported to be in critical condition, dealing with severe traumas such as liver rupture, collapsed lung, splenic rupture, and traumatic brain injuries.

In response to the incident, Greek authorities initiated a comprehensive search and rescue mission, deploying a private vessel with civilian divers and a military helicopter equipped with thermal imaging technology.

The Defense Ministry confirmed that an Air Force Super Puma helicopter was mobilized to support the ongoing rescue operations.
