Mexico Agrees to Yearly Water Deliveries to US
(MENAFN) Mexico has agreed to supply at least 350,000 acre-feet of water each year to the United States, officials announced on Tuesday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said they welcomed the renewed commitment, which strengthens the implementation of the 1944 Water Treaty, according to reports.
"Under the negotiated outcome, Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet of water per year to the United States during the current five-year cycle, providing stability for agricultural producers and rural communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley," the statement said.
The announcement follows a recent call between US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, during which both leaders reaffirmed their intent to address longstanding water management challenges.
Rubio described the agreement as a "win" for American farmers and ranchers, noting the US values Sheinbaum's "consistent efforts" to uphold Mexico’s obligations under the 1944 Water Treaty.
The statement added that the US and Mexico will hold monthly meetings to ensure that water deliveries remain timely and consistent.
