Mexico Pledges Annual Water Transfers to US

(MENAFN) Mexican authorities will supply no less than 350,000 acre-feet of water each year to the United States, officials confirmed on Tuesday, signaling a renewed phase of bilateral cooperation on shared water resources.

In a joint declaration, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins expressed approval of a fresh agreement between Washington and Mexico City, noting that it reinforces adherence to the long-standing 1944 Water Treaty.

"Under the negotiated outcome, Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet- of water per year to the United States during the current five-year cycle, providing stability for agricultural producers and rural communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley," according to the statement.

This development comes after a telephone conversation held last week between US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in which both leaders reiterated their determination to address persistent issues surrounding cross-border water allocation.

Rubio described the arrangement as a significant “win” for US farmers and livestock producers, while also praising Sheinbaum’s "consistent efforts" to fulfill Mexico’s obligations outlined in the 1944 Water Treaty.

The statement further indicated that both nations plan to conduct monthly discussions to monitor and guarantee punctual and reliable water deliveries.
