Telegram CEO Accuses France for Upholding Freedom
(MENAFN) Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has accused France of failing to uphold freedom, claiming it is the only country “criminally persecuting all social networks that give people some degree of freedom.”
The comments came after reports that French police raided the Paris offices of social media platform X. On X, Durov wrote: “Don’t be mistaken: this is not a free country.”
Durov has previously criticized the French government, alleging that President Emmanuel Macron is attempting to silence online criticism and turning the European Union into a “digital Gulag.” He also claimed Macron believes Europeans are “completely wrong to use social networks for information” and should rely solely on journalists and established media outlets.
The Paris police cybercrime unit carried out the raid on X offices on Tuesday. According to the Paris prosecutor, the investigation concerns content recommended by X’s algorithm and its AI chatbot, Grok. Authorities are examining allegations of complicity in distributing pornographic images of minors and spreading Holocaust denial content via the platform.
Durov remains under judicial supervision in France following his 2024 arrest, though his travel ban was reportedly lifted in November 2025.
