Ukrainian FM Accuses FIFA President of Being “Moral Degenerate”
(MENAFN) Ukraine’s foreign minister has harshly criticized FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling him a “moral degenerate” following comments in which Infantino spoke out against restrictions placed on Russian athletes.
According to reports, Infantino argued that bans and boycotts “don’t bring anything and just contribute to more hatred,” and suggested that Russian athletes should be allowed to take part in competitions “at least at youth level.”
Responding on social media, Ukraine’s chief diplomat accused Russia of ongoing civilian deaths and condemned calls to ease sporting restrictions. “And it keeps killing more while moral degenerates suggest lifting bans, despite Russia’s failure to end its war,” Sibiga wrote.
He further claimed that Infantino’s statements would be remembered with disgrace by future generations, drawing a comparison between the FIFA president’s position and the 1936 Olympic Games held in Nazi Germany.
Russia, for its part, has consistently maintained that its military operations target only military facilities in Ukraine and that civilians are not deliberately attacked.
Following the escalation of the conflict in 2022, athletes and national teams from Russia and Belarus were barred from most major international sporting events, including competitions organized by FIFA, UEFA, and the Olympic movement.
Ukraine has also introduced sanctions against specific Russian athletes whom it accuses of backing what it describes as “aggression and propaganda.”
More recently, some sporting bodies have moved to soften these measures. Late last year, the International Olympic Committee called on national federations to permit athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in junior-level events under their national flags and anthems.
Russian officials have repeatedly denounced the exclusions, describing them as a “politicization” of sport. The head of the Russian Olympic Committee has labeled the bans “political discrimination” and said they violate the principles of the Olympic Charter.
