Lavrov Denounces Economic, Army pressure on Cuba

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday reaffirmed Moscow’s stance against economic and military pressure on Cuba during a phone conversation with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez Parrilla.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two diplomats discussed priority areas of bilateral cooperation and broader international issues. “The Russian side reaffirmed its principled position regarding the unacceptability of economic and military pressure on Cuba, including the disruption of energy supplies to the island, which threatens to seriously worsen the economic and humanitarian situation in the country,” the statement said.

Lavrov also expressed a “firm commitment” to continue providing Cuba with the necessary political and material support, while the two ministers reviewed the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts.

The conversation came days after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency and creating a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to Cuba. The White House described the measure as intended to protect US national security and foreign policy interests by pressuring Cuba over what it called “malign actions and policies.” The order authorizes the Secretary of State and the Commerce Secretary to take “all necessary actions” to implement the tariffs and related measures, with the possibility of modification if Cuba or affected countries take significant steps to align with US objectives.

In response, Russia reiterated its opposition to unilateral sanctions against sovereign states, calling them “categorically unacceptable.” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned what she described as “illegitimate prohibitive measures against Havana and the pressure on the Cuban leadership and citizens,” while affirming confidence that Cuba would continue to maintain effective foreign economic ties despite external challenges.
