Trump Pledges of not Using Army Force to Seize Greenland

(MENAFN) Despite US President Donald Trump’s pledge not to use military force to seize Greenland, the territory’s premier said Monday that there has been no fundamental shift in the president’s stance regarding control over the Arctic island.

Trump has repeatedly called for US control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to Russia and China, and previously threatened sanctions against European countries that opposed the idea of taking over the Danish territory. He later rescinded these threats after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, stating that a framework for negotiations involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region had been established.

Speaking to parliament in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the US president’s view of Greenland and its population remains unchanged. “Overall, the message and objective are clear: Greenland must be taken over and governed by the US. Unfortunately, this remains valid and unchanged,” Nielsen said, according to Danish public broadcaster DR.

Discussions between the US, Denmark, and Greenland have been underway since last week in an effort to address the situation and prevent further tensions over the island’s status.
