US Judge Blocks Trump Administration from Ending Haitian Protections
(MENAFN) A federal court in Washington, DC, has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ending protections for roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals.
District Judge Ana Reyes issued the ruling on Monday, preventing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) while the court reviews a legal challenge to the decision.
"Plaintiffs charge that (Homeland Security) Secretary (Kristi) Noem preordained her termination decision and did so because of hostility to nonwhite immigrants. This seems substantially likely," Reyes wrote in her judgment, highlighting concerns about the motivations behind the policy.
TPS is a humanitarian program that grants temporary legal residency and work authorization to citizens of countries facing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other conditions that make returning unsafe.
Haiti’s designation under TPS began in 2010 following a catastrophic earthquake and has been renewed multiple times. The country has continued to struggle with persistent gang violence and political instability, which worsened after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
