Trump States Putin Agreed to Stop Assaults on Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he spoke directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin and secured an agreement to suspend attacks on Ukraine for one week, citing concerns over the country’s extreme cold weather.
Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump said he requested a temporary halt to missile strikes, particularly those targeting major urban centers. "I did call up President Putin," he said, noting that Russia was experiencing the "same cold wave" as the US, while emphasizing that conditions in Ukraine were even harsher. "They have a tremendous cold wave," he added.
Trump said he asked Putin: "if you wouldn't shoot for a period of one week, no missiles going into Kyiv or any other towns, and he's agreed to do so." He concluded his remarks with a modest acknowledgement: "It's something."
Following the statements, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Trump had requested a pause in attacks on Ukraine until February 1, but did not clarify whether Putin had formally agreed to the proposal.
