Trump Says Putin Agreed to One-Week Pause in Attacks on Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to suspend attacks on Ukraine for a period of one week after concerns were raised about the severe winter conditions affecting the country, according to reports.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he personally reached out to Putin to seek a temporary stop to missile strikes, especially those aimed at large urban centers. "I did call up President Putin," he said, explaining that Russia is experiencing harsh weather similar to the United States, but stressing that conditions in Ukraine are far worse.
Referring to the extreme temperatures, Trump said, "They have a tremendous cold wave," adding that he asked the Russian leader "if you wouldn't shoot for a period of one week, no missiles going into Kyiv or any other towns, and he's agreed to do so."
Commenting on the development, Trump described the move as limited but meaningful, saying, "It's something."
Following Trump’s remarks, a Kremlin spokesperson confirmed that the US president had requested a pause in Russian strikes on Ukraine until Feb. 1, but stopped short of confirming whether Moscow had formally agreed to the proposal, according to statements cited by reports.
