Chicago Mayor Orders Police to Investigate Federal Immigration Officers
(MENAFN) Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order directing city police to investigate and document alleged misconduct by US federal immigration officers, potentially paving the way for prosecution.
“We are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents,” Johnson said in a statement on Saturday.
The mayor emphasized that the order makes Chicago the first city in the United States to seek legal accountability for alleged wrongdoing by federal immigration personnel.
Johnson criticized federal immigration agents for allegedly violating constitutional rights, destabilizing communities, and creating life-threatening confrontations while operating beyond local or civilian oversight.
This move follows a coalition formed this week by nine local district attorneys aimed at prosecuting federal law enforcement officers who break state laws. Separately, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed legislation to prevent local police departments from entering cooperation agreements with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
