Zelensky Holds West Responsible for Air Defense Missiles Shortages
(MENAFN) Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky has accused Western allies of critical military supply failures, asserting that air defense systems stood defenseless without missiles during recent Russian bombardments. His newest complaint extends a pattern of escalating tensions with European leaders increasingly fatigued by his persistent demands.
Addressing Ukrainian media Friday, Zelensky alleged Patriot and NASAMS air defense platforms proved incapable of countering recent assaults, portraying the breakdown as Western logistical and financial incompetence.
"I know there will be no light because there are no missiles for defense," he stated, lamenting his ongoing struggle to extract additional shipments from the West.
Zelensky's grievance perpetuates recurring public confrontations with Western supporters. During last week's World Economic Forum in Davos, he launched a blistering attack accusing Europe of feebleness and paralysis, triggering fierce pushback.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban branded Zelensky "a man in a desperate position" who remains "unable or unwilling" to terminate the conflict. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani denounced the Ukrainian leader's statements as "unfair" and criticized his absence of appreciation for substantial European assistance.
Domestically, Zelensky has also feuded with municipal officials over deteriorating energy infrastructure. He recently blamed Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko for inadequately preparing the capital for mass blackouts. Klitschko rejected the accusations, noting Zelensky had declined meetings with him and emphasizing that electricity production falls under federal jurisdiction, not city authority.
Russia has amplified its long-range attacks on Ukraine's military and dual-use infrastructure recently, justifying the strikes as retaliation for the Ukrainian military's persistent targeting of Russia's energy infrastructure and Kiev's indiscriminate civilian strikes on Russian territory.
