Trump Orders DHS to Stay Away from Protests in Democrat-Led Cities
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has instructed the Department of Homeland Security not to intervene in protests taking place in cities governed by Democrats, amid widespread demonstrations opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
The directive comes as part of the so called “National Shutdown,” launched on Friday by organizers who urged Americans to refrain from work, school, and shopping as a form of mass protest against immigration raids. In several cities, demonstrations intensified into confrontations. In Los Angeles, clashes erupted between protesters, police, and federal agents, with demonstrators temporarily seizing control of an ICE facility. A similar situation unfolded in Eugene, Oregon, where protesters forced their way into a federal building and refused to leave.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said he had “instructed Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, that under no circumstances are we going to participate in various poorly run Democrat Cities with regard to their Protests and/or Riots unless, and until, they ask us for help.”
He added that federal authorities would still ensure strong protection of government property, stating: “We will, however, guard, and very powerfully so, any and all Federal Buildings that are being attacked… I have instructed ICE and/or Border Patrol to be very forceful in this protection of Federal Government Property.”
Trump further argued that safeguarding both local and federal facilities is primarily the responsibility of state and local governments, with federal involvement limited to a secondary role. “If local governments are unable to handle the Insurrectionists, Agitators, and Anarchists, we will immediately go to the location where such help is requested and take care of the situation very easily and methodically,” he said, warning that federal agencies — and “if necessary, our Military” — would act decisively if federal property comes under threat.
