Thailand Kicks Off Early Voting for Parliamentary Elections

(MENAFN) Advance voting commenced at 8 a.m. local time (0100GMT) Sunday as Thailand kicked off early balloting ahead of its parliamentary elections, offering approximately 2 million registered voters—those unable to participate on the official February 8 polling date—their chance to cast ballots.

The Election Commission reported that 2.41 million citizens had registered for the early voting process, which will wrap up at 5 p.m. (1000GMT), media reported.

The Southeast Asian nation has 52.92 million registered eligible voters overall.

Election officials established 424 polling facilities for citizens voting outside their home constituencies, alongside 421 stations for early voters within their own constituencies across Bangkok and additional provinces.

Authorities also designated 22 specialized polling locations spanning 18 provinces to accommodate elderly citizens and voters with disabilities.

Bangkok recorded the largest volume of early voting registrations, with 844,672 individuals signing up to vote ahead of schedule.

Over 90 candidates representing 57 political parties are vying for 500 parliamentary seats in the House of Representatives during the February 8 elections.
