Chairperson of African Union Commission Condemns Attacks in Niger
(MENAFN) The Chairperson of the African Union Commission condemned recent violent attacks in Niger, including an assault on Hamani Diori International Airport in Niamey, and reaffirmed the organization’s support for the country.
He said he learned “with deep concern” of the armed attack at the airport on the night of January 28–29 and expressed “profound sadness” over a separate deadly assault on January 18 in the village of Bosiye in western Niger, which left approximately 30 civilians dead.
“These heinous acts form part of the campaign of terror conducted by violent extremist groups deliberately targeting civilian populations and public infrastructure,” he said, praising the “swift and effective response of the Nigerien security forces” that helped contain the airport incident.
The African Union leader expressed solidarity with the people of Niger and extended condolences to both the families of the victims and the Nigerien government.
He recognized the efforts of Nigerien authorities to fight terrorism and violent extremism, highlighting recent military operations. He noted “the significant results achieved during the recent large-scale operation in the Tillabéri region,” which led to the neutralization of several armed elements, the disruption of terrorist groups, and the recovery of property stolen from local populations.
He emphasized that terrorism and violent extremism continue to threaten peace, stability, and territorial integrity, and confirmed that the African Union Commission remains ready to support Niger’s ongoing efforts.
Meanwhile, the US government ordered the departure of non-essential personnel and family members from its embassy in Niamey, citing “real risks” to their safety, and advised citizens: "Do not travel to Niger for any reason due to crime, unrest, terrorism, health, and kidnapping."
