Czech Republic to Cease 250-Year Hard Coal Mining Operations

(MENAFN) The Czech Republic is shutting down hard coal extraction operations after a quarter-millennium of production, a radio station announced Friday.

The nation's final deep coal extraction facility—the CSM mine located in the Karvina region—will cease all operations by late January, with miners scheduled to extract the last payload of coal and transport it to ground level this Saturday.

Technical decommissioning procedures for the CSM mine are projected to span approximately three years. The facility's operating company has developed a comprehensive business strategy that extends through 2050, incorporating initiatives including methane gas extraction from abandoned shafts. Additionally, the company plans to explore alternative revenue streams and environmental remediation projects as part of its long-term transition away from fossil fuel extraction.

Meanwhile, brown coal extraction activities across the country are slated for complete termination by 2030, marking another significant milestone in the nation's energy transition.

The closure represents a historic turning point for Czech industry and energy policy, ending centuries of coal dependency.
