Germany Voices Skepticism Over Putin’s Commitment to Ukraine Peace
(MENAFN) Germany expressed deep skepticism Saturday regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin's genuine commitment to ending the Ukraine conflict as diplomatic negotiations advance.
Despite US President Donald Trump energizing peace initiatives with renewed vigor, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius argued Moscow's battlefield conduct contradicts any pretense of authentic diplomatic engagement. In remarks to an editorial network, he said: "So far, however, I see no signs that Russia seriously wants peace."
Pistorius referenced recent bilateral negotiations between combatants—facilitated by the US in Abu Dhabi last weekend—highlighting that Russia unleashed assaults on Ukraine "that has hardly been seen in this war."
The minister asserted the bombardments bore no connection to legitimate military targets. "This is terror directed exclusively against the civilian population – in a winter with temperatures of minus 20 degrees," he said.
He emphasized Putin has demonstrated zero willingness to compromise during pivotal negotiating junctures.
Addressing proposed combat suspension efforts, Pistorius contended that if Putin approached the Abu Dhabi discussions with sincerity, ceasefire requests would be unnecessary—attacks would cease not merely in Kyiv but nationwide.
"I have serious doubts that Moscow is taking the pause in attacks even remotely seriously," the minister added.
