9.5M Sudanese Forcibly Displaced Across 18 States
(MENAFN) The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) declared Thursday that Sudan has surpassed all nations to become the globe's most severe internal displacement catastrophe, with approximately 9.5 million people forcibly displaced across 18 states during nearly three years of relentless warfare.
"For nearly three years, Sudanese children have endured a deepening humanitarian emergency driven by violence, displacement, disease and widespread hunger," the agency announced in an official statement.
UNICEF confirmed its continued ground presence alongside partner organizations, delivering critical interventions to conflict-affected children and families—encompassing healthcare and nutritional services, potable water access, mental health assistance, and educational programming.
Yet the agency issued a stark warning that Sudan's catastrophe remains drastically underreported and faces acute funding shortages, severely constraining humanitarian organizations' capacity to address escalating requirements.
UNICEF emphasized that children shoulder the conflict's most devastating impact, reinforcing the critical imperative for enduring peace and national stability.
Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have waged uninterrupted combat that both regional and international peace negotiations have been unable to halt. The fighting has resulted in thousands of casualties.
