Denmark, Greenland Negotiate Arctic Surveillance Aircraft Deal
(MENAFN) Danish Defense Ministry officials are finalizing aircraft lease negotiations with Air Greenland to enhance regional surveillance capabilities, according to a Saturday statement from the ministry.
The initiative represents a wider strategy to integrate Greenlandic enterprises into governmental operations, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen explained during a joint Saturday afternoon press briefing in Nuuk alongside Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt.
The proposed arrangement would authorize Air Greenland to conduct surveillance flights throughout Greenlandic airspace. This operational transition corresponds with provisions outlined in the inaugural Arctic and North Atlantic agreement—executed by participating entities and the Greenland government—which mandates the progressive retirement of Challenger aircraft while reassigning Arctic surveillance and rescue responsibilities to civilian contractors.
"It is crucial that the cooperation should take place with an actor that has experience with flying under the special conditions that apply in Greenland," the statement said.
Operational deployment of the aircraft is anticipated prior to the conclusion of 2027. Finalization of the agreement necessitates preliminary approval through legislative action from the Danish Parliament's Finance Committee.
