Indonesia's Mount Semeru Experiences Dual Eruptions
(MENAFN) Mount Semeru discharged volcanic material twice on Thursday, propelling ash plumes as high as 700 meters (2,296 feet) skyward from the summit in Indonesia's East Java province, state media confirmed.
The volcano, situated along the boundary separating Lumajang and Malang districts in East Java, initially erupted during early morning hours, ejecting ash columns reaching 500 meters (1,640 feet) in a 123-second event, a news agency reported. The subsequent eruption persisted for 115 seconds with peak amplitude measurements of 22 millimeters.
Mukdas Sofian, an officer stationed at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, issued safety warnings for the surrounding area. "The public is also prohibited from engaging in activities within a 5-kilometer (3 miles) radius of the crater/peak of Mount Semeru due to the risk of ejected rocks," Sofian stated.
