Greenland Sets “Red Lines” as Talks Begin with U.S.

(MENAFN) Greenland has established firm boundaries that cannot be violated during ongoing negotiations with the United States regarding the territory's future, according to Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The self-governing Danish territory has become the epicenter of transatlantic tensions after US President Donald Trump revealed intentions to acquire it, pointing to its valuable mineral reserves and critical geographic positioning. Trump declined to dismiss using military action and warned of potential tariffs against those resisting the proposal. However, the US leader recently adopted a more conciliatory approach, declaring that he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had established a "framework" for an arrangement addressing Greenland and Arctic defense matters.

Denmark and Greenland subsequently established a senior-level task force alongside the US to examine the potential agreement.

During remarks at Paris' Sciences Po University on Wednesday, Nielsen confirmed the task force has commenced operations. While expressing willingness to collaborate with Washington on Arctic protection, he emphasized that Greenland and Denmark would maintain unwavering positions on critical matters.

"I will not go into details about what might be included in such an agreement. But the conclusion is already written: there are red lines we cannot cross, from a Greenlandic perspective," Nielsen stated, reinforcing comments by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who appeared with him and declared the island's independence inviolable.

"We will try to find a way forward with the US. We share concerns about Arctic security. But the conclusion must be on the table from the beginning… that you can never compromise on democratic values. One of the most basic is that territorial integrity must be respected," she said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio verified Wednesday that technical discussions involving Greenland, Denmark, and the US are currently in progress, explaining they will occur privately to prevent a "media circus." Rubio emphasized the US has no plans to employ military force against Greenland, adding the matter would transition to a "professional, straightforward" diplomatic channel.

The framework agreement's specifics have not been publicly released. Rutte previously indicated NATO allies would strengthen Arctic defense measures under the arrangement, likely through enhanced US military deployment. Trump posted on Truth Social that deliberations would encompass installation of his multi-layered Golden Dome missile defense infrastructure, pledging additional details as negotiations advance.
