Plane Crash in Northeast Colombia Kills Fifteen, Including Congressman

(MENAFN) A small aircraft went down on Wednesday in northeastern Colombia, resulting in the deaths of all 15 people on board, including a sitting member of congress.

The wreckage was discovered by local farmers in the rural area of Curasica, within the municipality of Playa de Belén, according to the region’s Secretary of Citizen Security, George Quintero.

Quintero confirmed that 13 passengers and two crew members lost their lives, and added that multiple search and rescue teams were immediately sent to the crash site.

Norte de Santander Governor William Villamizar Laguado said: “Unfortunately, we have to report that the small aircraft was found in the upper part of a protected area in the municipality of La Playa. We have received the first images, and it appears there are no survivors. Seven bodies have been recovered and the search for the others is ongoing.”

Among those killed was Diogenes Quintero Amaya, a member of the House of Representatives who was recognized as a prominent advocate for victims of displacement in the Catatumbo region.

The Beech 1900D plane, operated by Colombia’s state-owned airline, had vanished from radar near La Playa de Belén in the Norte de Santander department.

It had been traveling to the city of Ocaña and was expected to land at 12:10 p.m. local time.
