Iran Says It Has No Recent Talks with US Envoy Amid Rising Tensions
(MENAFN) Iran’s foreign minister dismissed reports suggesting renewed communication with Washington, saying there have been no recent exchanges with the US envoy as concerns mount over a possible American military move against Tehran.
According to statements given to state media and cited by reports, Abbas Araghchi said there had been no interaction with Steve Witkoff in recent days and stressed that Iran had not sought negotiations. “There has been no contact between me and Witkoff in recent days, and we have not requested talks,” Araghchi said.
His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump claimed that additional American naval forces were heading toward the region and asserted that Tehran was pursuing diplomacy with Washington. “They want to make a deal. I know so. They called on numerous occasions. They want to talk,” Trump told a news outlet.
Araghchi countered that while Iran is not engaged in direct talks with the US, several countries are serving as intermediaries and remain in communication with Tehran. He added that neighboring states are increasingly alarmed by the rising tensions and the risk of wider instability. “Countries in the region understand that any military threat would destabilize the entire region,” he warned.
He urged Washington to drop what he described as coercive tactics, excessive demands, and the introduction of “unreasonable issues,” emphasizing that talks must follow established diplomatic norms and be conducted on an equal basis. “Negotiations under threat cannot succeed,” he said, noting that although various individuals and governments have expressed interest in mediation or have reached out, Iran’s stance “remains unchanged.”
Strains between Tehran and Washington have deepened following anti-government demonstrations in Iran, with the US administration reiterating that all options remain available, including military measures. Iranian officials, for their part, have cautioned that any attack by the United States would be met with a “swift and comprehensive” response.
