Trump-Backed Candidate Inaugurates as Honduras President

(MENAFN) Nasry “Tito” Asfura, the US-backed conservative favorite, officially took office as President of Honduras on Tuesday, amid lingering controversy over the legitimacy of his election and his support from US President Donald Trump.

The 67-year-old began his 2026–2030 term at the National Congress, taking the oath of office from Congressional leader Tomas Zambrano, who placed the presidential sash on him. Addressing a small gathering of supporters, Asfura emphasized urgency and public service, stating: “We have to get to work with humility. Time has started to run, and we have to solve people’s problems in order to serve them.”

The inauguration in Tegucigalpa occurred without the usual attendance of international or regional leaders from neighboring countries. Asfura focused his speech on policy priorities, highlighting initiatives in security, welfare, and education, including the printing of 10 million books for first-grade students.

His election followed a political crisis that divided the nation. The ruling Libre party rejected the results, labeling them fraudulent and criticizing Trump’s backing as interference. At the ceremony, Asfura appealed for national unity: “Hondurans want peace and prosperity, and that is what we are going to focus on. A divided family does not move forward, and Honduras is a great family that must be respected and work together for its future.”

Ahead of his inauguration, Asfura planned international visits, including meetings with US officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He enters office promising to concentrate on improving security and boosting the Honduran economy.
