Dean of Moscow State University Launches AI Faculty

(MENAFN) Moscow State University (MSU) has provided new information about its recently established Artificial Intelligence (AI) faculty, which began in September with the aim of consolidating all of the university’s AI research programs alongside its MGU-270 supercomputer, designed to support advanced AI-based studies.

As stated by reports, MSU Dean Ivan Oseledets spoke to RBC Radio on Tuesday about the anticipated cost of attending the new faculty. While the exact tuition has not yet been finalized, Oseledets indicated that it will follow the university’s unified educational standard and will be broadly similar to fees charged by other faculties with comparable academic programs. MSU’s admissions board reports that tuition for the 2026 academic year ranges from 420,000 to 760,000 rubles ($5,500–$10,000) annually.

The AI faculty will offer 36 bachelor’s and 36 master’s degree places starting September 1, according to the dean.

“We want to train researchers in the first place… Our goal is to prepare future scientific leaders, an elite who will then be able to create small scientific groups around themselves, and then larger scientific groups,” Oseledets said.

In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the transformative potential of AI, comparing it to the mid-20th century space program. He stated that “artificial intelligence is a much more groundbreaking, all-encompassing, and, as they say, end-to-end technology.” According to reports, Putin highlighted that AI integration into production will generate new roles requiring goal-setting, data skills, an engineering mindset, and personal responsibility.

Earlier this month, Putin directed the government to draft a comprehensive six-month plan for AI development in Russia. A special presidential commission will oversee the deployment of AI across multiple economic sectors and within federal and local government agencies.
