Zelensky Pushes for Accelerated EU Entry
(MENAFN) Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, is urging that his nation be admitted into the European Union as early as next year, a proposal that has already stirred resistance among several EU member countries.
In a post published on X on Tuesday, Zelensky revealed that he had spoken with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker about the latest round of Russia–US–Ukraine discussions held in Abu Dhabi. He explained that while the talks were largely centered on military issues, they also addressed broader questions related to security assurances.
“Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is one of the key security guarantees not only for us, but also for all of Europe,” he wrote. “That is why we are speaking about a concrete date – 2027 – and we count on partners’ support for our position.”
However, only days before that statement, Stocker publicly expressed reservations about speeding up Ukraine’s application. “I’m not a fan of the fast lane. The admission criteria must be met,” he said, stressing that the “conditions should be the same for everyone.”
According to a media outlet, the idea of granting Ukraine an accelerated path to EU membership is included in a US-supported $800 billion reconstruction and “prosperity” initiative that was discreetly shared with EU governments by the European Commission last week.
The outlet reported that EU leaders were unsettled less by the enormous price tag and more by the plan’s explicit connection between Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts and its formal accession to the bloc.
