Blue Economy Innovation Centre Launched In Aqaba

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, inaugurated the Blue Economy Innovation Centre on Monday.

Chairman of ASEZA Commissioners Shadi Majali, during the launch ceremony, said the center is part of the authority's strategy to position Aqaba as a leading regional hub for the blue economy by supporting innovation, entrepreneurship, and applied research.

Also the centre supports empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and opening new investment opportunities that diversify the local economy, create quality jobs, and ensure the sustainable use of marine resources, according to ASEZA statement.

Majali described the centre as an "advanced" national platform for fostering sustainable investment and innovation in blue economy sectors.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the Royal vision announced at the Third United Nations Oceans Conference in Nice in 2025 and complements national and international efforts to promote sustainable ocean management and marine ecosystem protection.

UNDP Resident Representative in Jordan Randa Abu Hasan said the centre serves as a practical model for translating blue economy concepts into tangible developmental impact.

She stressed its role in developing the national blue economy strategy, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation and supporting environmentally low-impact economic activities in order to balance economic growth with marine conservation while generating sustainable job opportunities.

During the launch, organisers announced that applications would soon open for the SMEs in Aqaba seeking to transition to blue economy activities.

A financial support package of JD 200,000 will be provided this year to help these projects develop their ideas and expand operations within the blue economy framework, promoting both economic and environmental sustainability in the region, according to the statement.
