Jordan Seals Key Gas Agreement to Power Syria

(MENAFN) Syria secured a critical natural gas supply agreement with Jordan on Monday, marking a significant development in the nation's effort to restore reliable electricity, according to Syrian government officials.

The arrangement represents a crucial milestone for fuel procurement aimed at powering generation facilities, expanding energy source diversity, and ensuring consistent electrical service across Syria, authorities announced.

Mohammad al Bashir, Syria's energy minister, and Jordan's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Al Kharabsheh witnessed the signing ceremony in Damascus between the Syrian Petroleum Company and Jordan's National Electric Power Company.

The contract stipulates that Jordan will deliver approximately 4 million cubic meters—equivalent to 140 million cubic feet—of natural gas daily to bolster Syria's power infrastructure.

Jordanian authorities confirmed that gas flows commenced January 1, with daily volumes fluctuating between 30 and 90 million cubic feet.

Supply operations rely on a floating storage and regasification unit operated by Egypt's Energos Force, currently stationed at Aqaba, Jordan's Red Sea port. To guarantee uninterrupted delivery past March, Jordan is securing an additional FSRU through a lease arrangement, officials confirmed.

The deal follows Syria's recent consolidation of control over strategic petroleum and gas installations in northern and eastern regions, achieved through security coordination with the Kurdish-commanded Syrian Democratic Forces.
