Tennessee recorded the highest concentration of blackouts, with as many as 255,452 utility customers experiencing power loss as the harsh weather moved through the region.

Referring to information from the National Weather Service, a news agency stated that 17 states have announced states of emergency.

Authorities in these areas are mobilizing emergency response teams and staging critical resources to prepare for worsening conditions.

Meteorologists cautioned that regions avoiding the most intense snowfall could still face freezing rain and “catastrophic ice accumulation,” according to media accounts, raising concerns about further damage and hazardous travel.

The severe storm has already proven deadly, with at least six fatalities confirmed on Sunday. In addition, air travel has been heavily disrupted, as over 16,000 flights across the United States were called off, while thousands of others faced delays at airports nationwide.
