Media Says Putin-Zelensky Summit Imminent

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky may hold direct talks in the coming weeks if current negotiations between their nations and the United States maintain momentum, media reports.

Two days of three-way peace discussions in Abu Dhabi concluded Saturday, marking the first joint session involving Russian, US, and Ukrainian delegations since the conflict intensified nearly four years ago.

Axios quoted an unnamed American official on Saturday, saying the negotiations in the UAE "went as well as we could have expected. We feel good where we are now."

"We are very close to a meeting between Putin and Zelensky," another US official claimed. More trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine talks "need to happen before a meeting between the leaders. We don't think we are far away from that. If we continue down the current path we will get to that place," the source explained.

The official indicated that the next scheduled trilateral session on February 1 in Abu Dhabi could pave the way for a summit in Moscow or Kiev. Putin and Zelensky last held face-to-face discussions in Paris during December 2019 at negotiations facilitated by France and Germany. They held telephone conversations twice in the subsequent year.

In 2022, Zelensky issued a decree prohibiting negotiations with Putin after Russian accession referendums in four former Ukrainian regions. Moscow has consistently highlighted that Kiev has not rescinded or modified the prohibition.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously stated that the Russian president remains open to a potential summit with Zelensky, though he emphasized it must be thoroughly prepared and aimed at formalizing specific agreements to terminate the conflict, developed through expert-level work between both nations.

During his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this week, Zelensky asserted Ukraine was receptive to a ceasefire with Russia, while insisting on peace exclusively on Kiev's terms, along with Western weaponry and financial support. Moscow contends that any resolution must be lasting, acknowledge ground realities, and tackle the fundamental origins of the crisis.
