US envoy meets Netanyahu amid ongoing breaches of ceasefire

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said on Sunday that he held “positive” discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the advancement of a Washington-brokered 20-point peace plan, despite ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Witkoff, accompanied by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, traveled to Israel immediately after trilateral Russia–US–Ukraine talks in the UAE earlier this week.

The talks with Netanyahu focused on “the continued progress and implementation planning for Phase 2 of President Trump’s 20-Point Plan for Gaza,” Witkoff said in a statement. He added that discussions also covered “broader regional issues,” without specifying, likely alluding to tensions with Iran and potential US military options in the region.

The US delegation reportedly urged Israeli officials to move forward with Phase 2, which involves reopening the Rafah border crossing to Egypt. Israel has been hesitant to implement this step, seeking to link it with the disarmament of Hamas and the return of the body of the last deceased hostage believed to be held by the militant group.
