Pope urges global action, prayers to end wars in conflict zones
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Sunday appealed for increased international action to bring an end to the war in Ukraine and called for prayers for peace in all regions affected by conflict, including the Middle East.
Speaking after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the pope highlighted the ongoing suffering in Ukraine, where civilians remain vulnerable to harsh winter conditions amid continued hostilities.
“Even in these days, Ukraine continues to be struck by relentless attacks, leaving entire populations exposed to the cold of winter,” he said.
“I follow what is happening with sorrow, I am close to those who suffer, and I pray for them,” the pontiff added, noting that the prolonged conflict is causing “ever more serious consequences for civilians,” deepening divisions between peoples and delaying the prospect of a just and lasting peace.
“I urge everyone to intensify their efforts to end the war,” he said.
His remarks coincided with the expectation that Ukrainian and Russian mediators will hold in-person talks in Abu Dhabi, facilitated by the United States, with a second round of negotiations reportedly planned for next weekend.
The pope also encouraged people to act as peacemakers “at home, at school, in sports, everywhere,” emphasizing that violence should be rejected “neither in words nor in actions.”
