Gunman Kills Eleven in Mexico Soccer Match

(MENAFN) Armed assailants unleashed gunfire during an amateur football game in central Mexico on Sunday, leaving at least 11 people dead and 12 others injured, regional officials confirmed.

The assault unfolded at approximately 5:20 p.m. local time (2320 GMT) on a soccer field located in the Loma de Flores community within Salamanca, situated in the central state of Guanajuato. Eyewitnesses reported that multiple gunmen arrived in a pair of pickup trucks, exited the vehicles, and opened fire indiscriminately on both players and onlookers.

Local government authorities stated that 10 victims were pronounced dead at the location, while an additional person succumbed to injuries following hospital transport. Medical personnel transferred the wounded to surrounding healthcare facilities for emergency treatment.

The Guanajuato state prosecutor's office announced that investigators have initiated a probe into the massacre.

As of Sunday evening, no suspects had been apprehended. Security personnel—including state police forces, the National Guard, and the Mexican army—have deployed an operational response to track down and capture the perpetrators.

Guanajuato ranks among Mexico's most violence-plagued states in recent years, with the overwhelming majority of killings linked to territorial conflicts between rival organized crime syndicates competing for control of lucrative criminal enterprises.
