Putin to discuss use of frozen assets to back Trump’s Board of Peace
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he would address the potential use of frozen Russian assets to support US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace during a meeting with US envoys in Moscow later in the day.
Speaking at a Kremlin meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Putin stated, “We are ready to direct $1 billion to this new structure. First and foremost to support the Palestinian people and to direct these funds to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and, in general, to the resolution of the problems of Palestine.” He added that the matter of frozen Russian assets had already been discussed with US officials, emphasizing that Russia’s approach to the Palestinian issue and broader Middle East settlement is “principled and not opportunistic.”
The talks in Moscow involve US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Witkoff had earlier noted at a Davos event that Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations have made “a lot of progress” and are reportedly “down to one issue.”
The Board of Peace was announced last week by the White House, with dozens of countries invited to join. Membership is free for the first three years, after which permanent seats reportedly require a $1 billion contribution. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine had been invited but questioned how participation could occur alongside Russia and Belarus.
