EU Halts Progress on US Trade Pact

(MENAFN) The European Union has paused its work on a trade accord with the United States, according to a statement made Wednesday by the head of the European Parliament’s trade committee.

"Now official: EU-US deal is on hold until further notice!" Bernd Lange declared on the American social media platform X.

Lange explained that the negotiating team opted to suspend the committee’s efforts on the legal enforcement of the Turnberry agreement. He stressed, "Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake. Business as usual impossible," pointing to ongoing strains linked to Greenland and tariff policies.

At present, it is uncertain whether the entire trade pact has been abandoned or if the sections already enacted will remain valid.

The arrangement, which imposed 15% tariffs on European exports to the US, was initially agreed upon in a preliminary deal last July. Significant portions of the deal were put into practice even before the official signing.
