EU Commits USD2.3M in Humanitarian Aid for DR Congo

(MENAFN) The European Union committed €2 million ($2.3 million) in emergency humanitarian aid Wednesday for conflict-ravaged communities in South Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the Delegation of the EU in Congo, the emergency funds will deliver critical, life-preserving support to thousands facing dire circumstances as violence intensifies and humanitarian requirements escalate across South Kivu.

Armed hostilities in Congo—concentrated in the Uvira, Fizi, and Kalehe territories—have forced approximately 500,000 individuals from their homes, the EU reported. More than 90,000 have crossed into neighboring Burundi, with displacement figures climbing daily.

"This emergency response project will be implemented until the end of June 2026 and will benefit internally displaced populations in the hardest-hit areas of Uvira, Fizi and Kalehe," the statement said.

The assistance package will reinforce partner organizations' existing operations, prioritizing cash transfers, protection services, water access, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene programs, the statement added.

Mass exodus from South Kivu province continues unabated as violence persists and local resources dwindle under pressure from thousands fleeing combat zones.

The M23 rebel movement remains central to eastern Congo's escalating crisis.

The insurgent force now commands extensive territorial holdings, including both Goma and Bukavu—provincial capitals captured by the group in early 2025.

The United Nations, Kinshasa, and other international actors accuse neighboring Rwanda of backing M23, allegations Kigali consistently rejects.
