US to take control of Greenland by labeling it as sovereign army base

(MENAFN) A preliminary agreement under discussion would allow the United States to exercise control over specific areas of Greenland by designating them as sovereign military zones, according to reports referencing a draft framework linked to talks between US President Donald Trump and NATO’s secretary-general.

The understanding was shaped during meetings held alongside the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. European officials reportedly view the proposal as an alternative approach that avoids Trump’s earlier threats to take control of the entire Arctic island from Denmark. Both sides have indicated that the arrangement remains unfinished and subject to further negotiation.

Under the reported draft, Washington would be permitted to establish military installations in Greenland that would be treated as US territory for strategic purposes in the Arctic region.

The structure of the proposal is said to resemble an existing arrangement that allows the United Kingdom to retain two “sovereign base areas” abroad. At present, the United States already operates an airbase on Greenland’s northwestern coast under a defense agreement dating back to 1951.

According to reports, the framework also includes provisions to extend the US Golden Dome missile defense system into Greenland. In addition, the deal would reportedly enable the United States to extract rare-earth minerals in designated parts of the island without the need to obtain local permits.

Commenting on the proposal, Trump described it in highly positive terms, saying: “It’s a deal that people jumped at, really fantastic for the USA, gets everything we wanted, including especially real national security and international security.”

The NATO secretary-general later indicated in a media interview that his discussion with Trump marked a constructive starting point, explaining that his focus was on cooperating with Washington to strengthen protection of the island against external threats.

Not long after the meeting, Trump announced that he was withdrawing his earlier plan to impose new tariffs on European countries that opposed his position on Greenland.
