Trump reveals Arctic, Greenland deal framework following NATO talks
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that an initial framework for a future agreement covering Greenland and the wider Arctic region was reached following talks in Davos, Switzerland, according to official statements.
In remarks shared publicly, Trump said the understanding emerged after discussions with NATO’s secretary-general and described the talks as constructive. He wrote:
"Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.
This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,"
While no concrete details were disclosed, Trump indicated that negotiations are continuing. He confirmed that, in light of the framework, planned trade measures would be suspended, adding:
"Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,"
Trump also said further discussions are underway regarding the so-called Golden Dome in relation to Greenland. He noted that Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, along with other officials, will handle the negotiation process.
The announcement followed earlier warnings from Washington that tariffs of 10% would be imposed on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1, with rates potentially rising to 25% by June unless an agreement was reached for what Trump described as “the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
Those threats were rejected by European leaders, who reiterated support for Denmark and pledged a coordinated response.
Earlier on Wednesday, during an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump ruled out the use of military force to obtain Greenland, saying:
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable, but I won’t do that.”
